Times Beach, Missouri was a small town located in St. Louis County that was founded in 1925. The town gained national attention in the 1980s when it was discovered that the streets had been contaminated with dioxin, a toxic chemical byproduct. This contamination was a result of waste oil that had been sprayed on the roads to control dust. As a result, the town was evacuated and eventually disincorporated in 1985.
